Assignment Details

Over the first three weeks of this course, students are required to consider the sustainability-related issues and themes explored in the course and REFLECT on how these issues intersect with the world of business. These reflections are to be presented in a reflective journal, NOT a research assignment or description or summary of these themes.

These themes (including issues, challenges, concepts and approaches) MUST be discussed in terms of their relevance and/or implications for business and MUST be drawn from those raised in class presentations, discussions and activities, resources provided on the course Moodle page and/or prescribed readings. You need to make CLEAR CONNECTIONS between the course concepts and your reflections.

In this assessment task, students are required to demonstrate not only their understandings of the themes but also their consideration of the implications for the business sector and/or the student’s current/future role in business. Students should provide their thoughts, feelings, responses, reactions, opinions and ideas on the material explored. Critical thinking should be demonstrated in these reflections.

While this task is not a research task, sources referred to in your reflections still need to be referenced using the APA referencing style. For information on the style of writing required, please refer to the samples and guides provided on the course Moodle page.

Criteria:

This assessment task will be marked out of 100 and is worth 20% of your total mark for the BUGEN 5930 course. For further information on how this task will be assessed, please refer to the attached Assessment 1 - Reflective Journal – Sustainable Business Marking Rubric.

Recommended time: Suggested time to devote to this task - 18 hours.

Submission details:

• Word Limit 1000-1200 words - (assignments exceeding the word limit may not be marked and may be returned to the student for re-writing; assignments less than the required length will risk not covering the topic adequately and may result in a fail). Do not include references or bibliography in the word count.

• Note: While a Reflective Journal will mainly comprise of your own thoughts and reflections written in ‘your own words’, Federation University Australia rules relating to referencing, citation and acknowledgement must be complied with for any content from other sources.

• Due Date: The assignment is due by Sunday Week 4. Students are required to upload their assignment as a Word doc or PDF via the Assessment Task 1 Turnitin link on the course Moodle page.

1. Introduction

This journal involves reviewing the central themes and concepts from the course BUGEN 5930 Business Society and the Planet to understand sustainable business, identification ethical business practices and social responsibilities. I have been privileged to learn about the interdependency of social, physical and economic dynamics and factors in this course and how they affect business systems (Barros et al., 2020). This study analyzes how the lessons correlate to personal and career goals.

2. Reflection on Week 1: Introduction to the Course

Key Themes

The first week of the “Business, Society and the Planet” course introduced the flows and relationships of society and the natural environment with lectures and videos that established the theoretical basis of the relationship between economy, society and the natural environment (Snihur & Bocken, 2022). It was then I realized that these three components are interrelated in such a manner that when one of the components is being influenced, the rest of the components are also affected for university assignment help.

Personal Reflections

I also noticed how these themes made me realize the value of acknowledging ethics and sustainability in business. That’s why I was thinking about the common notion that the primary focus of any business should be maximizing its profit. However, I drew my attention to the fact that business organizations have social and ecological responsibility. The fact that any economic activities exercise profound effects on the global environment, and the lives of the people was something that involved me for the first time (Saura et al., 2020). This implied it was high time every business went forth and took into consideration, the effects of the social issues and the environments that arise due to complex business decisions.

Implications for Business

The ideas implemented in this week’s concepts have a close relation to my perspectives on business operations. The concepts of the relations between society, the environment, and the economy have helped me understand that organizations cannot work for profit only. They must generate value that delivers an improvement for stakeholders, including the natural environment (Genç, 2022). This is decision-making where the effects of the decision made are deemed based not on the short-run benefits based on the deal.

3. Reflection on Week 2: Introduction to Sustainability

Key Themes

The second week was dedicated to the critical evaluation of the sustainability concept with the emphasis on the Anthropocene the current age of the Earth characterized by the great impact of human activities. I found the information about sustainable development rather enlightening. It means that sustainability is not only the protection of the resources and the environment but also the provision of equal opportunities for the next generations. This was rather shocking as well as inspiring that human development is on the wrong path that cannot be sustained (Snihur & Bocken, 2022). It underlined the urgency of the action and the necessity of joint efforts to solve the ecological problems that humanity faces today, including climate change, the depletion of resources, and the loss of biological diversity.

Personal Reflections

The idea that the current approach is unsustainable was quite eye-opening and helped me understand that change to sustainable practices must occur. This forced me to think about my own life and the consequences of business processes. I wanted to be useful in a way that would help solve a problem rather than contribute to the issue at hand. The fact that I would be creating the future of the next generations was a strong driving force for me, and I started to understand sustainability as a must-have (Gomez et al., 2020). This reflection made me more determined to make better decisions concerning sustainability in the future and all aspects of my life.

Implications for Business

The talks on sustainability have far-reaching consequences on how business entities carry out their operations. From the above analysis, it can be seen that sustainability cannot be overlooked by businesses if they want to survive in the future. The notion of the Anthropocene therefore means that businesses have to be held accountable for the damages they are causing to the planet and trying to avoid it (Saura et al., 2020). This may comprise applying cleaner production methods, waste reduction, and the rational use of resources.

4. Reflection on Week 3: Sustainability for Business

Key Themes

The third week of the course was dedicated to the main message of how sustainability is trending and how fast it is happening. As indicated by the above discussion how even more business organisations have been realizing that it is mandatory to practice sustainable business for the survival of their organisations. (Barros et al., 2020). Amongst them, the green economy, which deals with the creation of new growth opportunities without posing threats to the environment and the earth’s limited resources, was quite intriguing.

Personal Reflections

In consideration of this week’s materials, I had the feeling of being a key actor towards the future of businesses. The concept of change being led by businesses was something that appealed to me. I understood that enterprises are not only mere spectators of the market processes; they are ready to become leaders of change (Gomez et al., 2020). The idea of the green economy also affected my previous beliefs about the conflict between economic development and environmental conservation.
Implications for Business

The concepts learned this week are quite significant for the management of business organizations. Thus, it can be concluded that sustainability is not just a fad but a paradigm that is becoming increasingly mandatory for businesses. Companies that do not incorporate sustainability into their operations will lag in the new economy that is gradually shifting to a sustainable economy (Genç, 2022). The call for change indicates that the business world should embrace change and embrace sustainability instead of waiting to be forced by public opinion.

5. Connections to Course Concepts

The theoretical perspectives remarked in the early weeks of the course have indeed had a crucial impact on how I conceive the relations between society, nature and economy. The talks about sustainability, the Anthropocene, and the place of business in sustainable development have enriched my understanding of the subject by bringing into focus the interdependency of the concepts. I can now realize that business decisions are made within a context that depends on and affects a larger system consisting of society and the environment (Snihur & Bocken, 2022). They have helped me to critically evaluate the relevance of ethics in the management of business organizations, especially on the aspect of the realization of profits with an aspect of consideration to Social and environmental returns.

6. Application of Knowledge and Skills

This course has been a valuable resource in my methodology towards the business and any decisions made. By analyzing the significance of sustainability and ethical standards, I can exercise their use throughout the theoretical and practical aspects. For instance in business strategies analysis, I evaluate the strategies’ impacts not only from the aspect of profits being made, but the sustainability of the profits being made, and their impacts on society and the environment (Barros et al., 2020). Further, the course has provided me with pertinent critical thinking skills, which entail the ability to assess the different problems in society and come up with viable solutions, which would conform to morale and sustainable standards.

7. Conclusion

The weeks have inarguably influenced my perception of the interdependence that exists between society, the physical environment, and the economy, especially concerning the function of business. Discussing ethical and sustainable values I have enhanced my concern towards their implementation in business solutions. Thus, having applied the knowledge and skills acquired, I am now more capable of making sound, ethically sound decisions that will support the concept of sustainability. This journey has brought out the need to adopt the concept of creating value for business while at the same time considering the social and ecological system.
