Introduction

When taking the recent lectures that dealt with the topic of cattle production and management, I got the full picture of the Australian beef cattle industry. This paper benefited from the discussions as it highlighted the various complexities involved in cattle farming including feed, cow comfort, breeding, and environmental factors. This reflection for university assignment help focuses on the experiences that have enriched the learner's understanding of cattle management as applied to dairy and beef production.

Analysis

I think the most thought-provoking notion I heard in the lectures is about the “dual purpose” of cattle (Galina and Geffroy, 2023). Earlier, these animals were selectively bred for both meat and milk purposes. However, I realised that the genes responsible for growth and milk yield are different and it is difficult to breed for both at the same time. I understood that there is a need for specialised breeding programmes to meet set production objectives. This principle applies to all the production animals and underlines the importance of enterprise-specific breeding goals.

80% of Australia’s milk production is produced in high rainfall regions along the southern and the east coastal lines is strategic. I also found that Australia exports around 35% of the total milk that is produced and is worth about $3.2 billion in 2018-19 speaks about the standards and outreach of the Australian dairy chain.
I felt that the discussion of dairy cattle breeds was quite informative. For instance, milk production per cow is at 10,000 liters a year and the number of dairy cows is 1.4 million of which many are Holsteins. I gained knowledge in understanding how breed selection affects production results. Furthermore, I explored cow comfort, particularly in the management of heat stress another feature characterising the Australian climate. I encountered the problems that result from a lack of quality feeds such as reduced milk, discarded milk, and reproductive disorders (Marios Moschovas et al. 2023). This continued to pass the message that promoting and maintaining quality cattle farming calls for more than just feeding the animals however, it should ensure the animals get the right food that will suit them at a certain stage of development. Overall, I was satisfied to get an overview of the Australian beef industry. Australia is the third largest exporter of beef in the world.

I gained knowledge about environmental conservation measures and policies that should be taken to support sustainable farming of cattle products as well as the social responsibilities of the producers within the livestock sector (Martyniuk, 2021). This reflection has helped me understand the many challenges that are associated with managing a successful cattle production enterprise.

Conclusion

In my experience in cattle production and management, I have learned both the challenges and rewards. The experience and skills which I have gathered will be very useful in any future striving in this area. This has made me realise the need to embrace flexibility and professional ethics in the provision of training for the cattle-rearing business. It will assist me in my future endeavors while working in this field.
